Abstract

Twenty-two different countries participate in the EurA1c programme each year using two samples with a value assigned by the reference method developed by the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC). Data obtained from more than 4000 participating laboratories provide a global overview of the performance of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) measurements. Since 2017, Mexico has been the only Latin American country participating in EurA1c. In this article, the Mexican experience was described and the results obtained over six years were analysed. Samples were analysed by the most used methodologies since some of them are applied in a great diversity of instruments. It was shown that most of the errors were due to imprecision and that there were significant differences between methods. Factors such as differences in equipment, the use of heterogeneous systems and different regulations or the lack of them were shown in the performances of the participating laboratories. The annual EurA1c evaluations showed a decrease in the dispersion of the average results reported by the Mexican participants, which was translated into a trend of improvement. An annual statistical performance test was carried out and the quality objective proposed by the IFCC for HbA1c determinations was used. EurA1c has become a driver of changes that are reflected in better performance of the participant laboratories, and consequently, in better patient care.
