Abstract

Descriptive retrospective study of ova and parasite exam results from multiple stool samples (O&P) and perianal swabs (PS) submitted for analysis from January 2020 to December 2023. A total of 1806 stool specimens from 1285 patients (1157 O&P and 649 PS) were analised. Positive results were found in 300 O&P (25.9%) and 87 PS (13.4%). The overall rate of parasitosis was 27.4%, significantly higher in individuals under 16 years of age (35.3%) as compared to adults (22.5%) (p<0.001). The most prevalent parasites in the <16 year-old group were: Enterobius vermicularis (21.8%), Blastocystis spp. (14.8%), Entamoeba coli (4.9%), Giardia lamblia (4.5%), and Endolimax nana (3.0%). In patients aged 16 years or older: Blastocystis spp. (15.8%), E. nana (4.4%), E. vermicularis (3.9%), E. coli (2.9%), and G. lamblia (1.1%). E. vermicularis and G. lamblia were associated with pediatric patients (p<0.001). The distribution is consistent with local and regional literature.
